On this day in 1985, the Stroh Brewing Company announced it was closing its Detroit plant. Just three years earlier, in 1982, Stroh’s had purchased Schlitz, making it the 3rd largest brewery in the country.

Started in 1850 by German immigrant Bernard Stroh, the Stroh’s brewery in Detroit was 135 years old when it was announced it would no longer be operational.  The building was demolished the following year.  We’re still left with some of their great vintage commercials: 1979 Lost at Sea, 1984 Trained Dog.

Drink Local, people.
